Hi #1 Descaling Vessels For Effective Heat Transfer!!!.

It’s been a few years since we addressed this topic head-on, which is why we feel it’s necessary to revisit the importance of descaling in ships.
Ships contain a number of heat exchangers, serving many of the same purposes as HVAC system, refrigeration systems and fresh water systems, to name a few.
When water scale develops on a heat transfer surface, heat transfer is greatly affected, reducing equipment efficiency and increasing energy consumption, which increases operating costs.
All too often, the scale buildup is ignored in favor of reducing operational downtime and saving money, resulting in efforts to fix the problem at the last minute or only when mechanical failure occurs.
In 2011, when we last talked about the importance of descaling in ship maintenance, we explained that heat exchanger cleaning is accomplished either mechanically or through the use of chemicals. 
The downside to mechanical cleaning is that the equipment must be dismantled and it requires a good amount of downtime, but with chemical descalers you can clean the equipment in place, reducing the workload and downtime. 
Your operation will save valuable maintenance dollars.
An effective descaling chemical product should offer the following:
  • Low corrosion rates. It should remove scale, but have low corrosion rates and not harm the system’s seals or gaskets.

  • Easily rinses out. It should only require a quick flush with water to get the product out, and it should leave no residue.

  • Cleans more than just scale. A descaler should also remove sediment, oil and the other materials that are often mixed in with scale.

  • Simple to use and quick acting. Ship operators need to minimize downtown, requiring an effective descaler to be a quick acting product that cleans scale fast.

Hi Building Explosion Underscores Need For Explosion - Proof Vacuum!.
Recently, 11 people were hurt in an explosion and fire in a metal-polishing shop in the Los Angeles area. 
Two of the 11 were critically injured, with third-degree burns covering 90% of their bodies, according to the Associated Press
Most of the victims suffered smoke inhalation.
The accident occurred at Gorilla’s Polishing Corp. located in La Habra, California. 
The resulting fire took about 40 minutes to extinguish, with 50 firefighters working to knock down the flames.
A preliminary investigation revealed the explosion was purportedly caused by dust and lint buildup in a duct system, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Scott Miller.
Incidents such as these are tragic reminders of the importance of maintaining a clean HVAC system as well as using an explosion-proof vacuum to keep your facility clean. 
It’s critical to take all the steps necessary to prevent an explosion or fire when you're dealing with dust or powdered substances at your facility.

Over 25,000 facilities in the US are considered hazardous because they contain airborne dust and flammable particles, according to OSHA
Fine combustible materials can burn rapidly and when a combustible dust is suspended in the air, it can explode.
The following materials can cause a combustible dust explosion: wood, coal, plastics, metals, sugar, paper, soap and textiles. 
A combustible dust explosion hazard may exist in a variety of industries including grain, food, plastics, paper, pulp, wood, rubber, furniture, pesticides, tobacco, food, coal, pharmaceuticals, metals and fossil fuels.
Sometimes facility managers, employers and other employees are not aware a hazard even exists. If your facility handles any of the above materials – among others – it’s imperative to use a specialized vacuum to keep your facility clean.

Dry Hazardous Area Vacuum recovers fine powders like coal dust, flammable dust and other powders. 
It’s recommended a certified vacuum for use in hazardous locations.
The vacuum is powered by compressed air and has a non-sparking, stainless steel tank and an anti-static 1 micron pocket filter. 
It can be used safely in areas where other vacuums could pose a risk of explosion. 
Other vacuums are available in 115V electric power configurations.
Combustible dust explosions can cause serious employee injuries as well as death, and/or the destruction of buildings. 
Such incidents have occurred over the past few decades as this video from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board illustrates.

Because 30% of the commercial buildings in the US already have poor IAQ issues, during the winter months occupants are even more likely to suffer the ill effects of exposure –including respiratory issues and allergies – to indoor pollutants.
So now businesses are footing the bills to cover the medical expenses of sick workers and they're also incurring costs because of lower productivity. US businesses see an estimated 33% drop in worker productivity that’s directly attributed to poor IAQ, according to Buildings.com.

Open doors and windows as often as possible to reduce moisture levels and pollutants. When there is poor ventilation, pollutant levels (from cleaners, adhesives, etc.) are more concentrated, says Jennifer Meek, a customer service manager for Enviro-Solutions.   1. Reduce the amount of chemicals used in a facility, especially those that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Meek recommends going through your chemical supply and replacing harsher chemicals with choices that emit fewer pollutants and VOCs.
  2. Replace the air filters on your building’s HVAC system according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule, notes Buildings.com. When you install the filters ensure that they’re secured tightly with no gaps between the frame and rack. This is crucial because respirable particles can pass through the gap without being filtered.
  3. Select a quality filter, one that is mechano-electret, providing a balance of mechanical and electret efficiency. It should perform better than a filter that only uses mechanical efficiency as the electrostatic effects can better capture the submicron particles that can cause health issues.

Improved IAQ can have a great impact on work performance, while reducing absenteeism and healthcare issues, according to Robert Martin, an associate category manager for Kimberly-Clark Professional Filtration. Martin also claims the proof is in the statistics
 – better IAQ reduces respiratory illnesses by about 76% and improves employee productivity by about 20%.

  • Flexibility to combine with local and regional reporting requirements and frameworks.
  • Up-to-date harmonization and reference to all available and internationally accepted reporting documents.
  • Overview tables, summaries and quick links to the specific components of the guidelines.
  • Complete glossary, reference lists, and visual guidance.

Afterwards he joined DuPont where he has worked for 18 years. He has held various technical and marketing positions in support of electrical insulation materials used in transformers and rotating machines. 
Jean-Claude's current role involves dealing with new product development and evaluation with industry customers and equipment manufacturers. He has been involved in Cigre working groups dealing with insulating fluids for electrical applications.
